This Sunday, November 24: Join poet, fiction writer, and essayist Kim Addonizio in this live, two-hour class and discover the Five Things She’s Learned about the ways that great poems work to surprise us, transcend time, and take us to unexpected places.
Kim is the author of eight poetry collections, two novels, two story collections, and two books on writing, including The Poet’s Companion and Ordinary Genius. Her work appears often in publications like The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Paris Review. Her latest great poetry collection, Exit Opera, was released in September 2024 by W.W. Norton.
This Sunday evening, Kim will share the  Five Things She’s Learned about the Poem's Progress. She'll detail the five key elements in a poem's progression—title, opening, middle, more middle, and ending—focusing specifically on the ways that each element contributes to the development of poems that surprise and resonate with readers. Kim will also guide participants through poetic structure, share her insights on crafting powerful first impressions, and offer her tested strategies for "sticking the landing" with memorable endings.
"We all know that poems are more than random thoughts or unvarnished journal entries," Kim writes in the introduction to her class. "They’re works of art that can move and delight us, comfort us in times of sorrow, draw us into shared experiences or show us worlds vastly different from our own. At the heart of poetry there’s an intimacy that transcends time and space."
