Tomorrow Night: Laurie Stone and Richard Toon share Five Things They've Learned about How to Write a Seductive Sentence
Please join us Sunday night for this, our last live class of the year.
Tomorrow night! Live and online!
This Sunday: Join writers and teachers Laurie Stone and Richard Toon and discover the Five Things They’ve Learned about the ways that great writing delivers genuine pleasure for the reader – and the writer.
Laurie is the author of six books, including Streaming Now, Postcards from the Thing That is Happening, which was longlisted for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award. She has written for The Village Voice, The Nation, Fresh Air, and more recently for N+1, Paris Review, and Evergreen Review. Her great Substack, Everything is Personal, is always remarkable, essential reading.
Richard was the director of the Museum Studies program at Arizona State University until his retirement in 2019, with a focus on the ways that museums, as informal learning spaces, act as authorities and organize knowledge. His creative writing has appeared in publications like Defunct, Superstition Review, and Int/AR Journal, as well as books such as The Face in the Mirror and Case Studies in Forensic Biohistory. For the past 18 years, he has shared a writing and teaching partnership with Laurie.
This Sunday, Laurie and Richard will share the Five Things They've Learned about How to Write a Seductive Sentence. Their class offers writers of all kinds hard-learned techniques to make writing pleasurable for themselves and for their readers. These strategies include Laurie's personal approaches to craft, form, and language; as well as practical tips and tools for creating compelling narratives, transforming abstract ideas into vivid moments, and experimenting with new literary forms and styles.
"We think writing should be a pleasure to produce —or why bother," the partners write in the introduction to their class. "We think the pleasure the writer feels while making something is partly what arouses pleasure for the reader. Pleasure for the writer and pleasure for the reader, that’s what we’ll talk about."
